Cable Chaos: A 15-Minute Fix for Your Desk

Cable mess is not a discipline problem. It is a design problem: cables have no assigned home, so they end up wherever gravity puts them. Give them one and the mess does not come back.

Step 1 — Unplug everything (5 minutes)

Pull every cable out and lay them flat. You will almost certainly find two or three plugged into nothing at all. Set those aside; that is the fastest win of the whole job.

Step 2 — Sort into two piles

Permanent cables (monitor, power, dock) and temporary ones (phone charger, headphones, anything you unplug daily). These get treated completely differently, and mixing them is why tidy desks stop being tidy.

Step 3 — Bundle the permanent ones out of sight

Run them together in a sleeve or a run of clips along the back edge of the desk, then down one leg. One thick line reads as deliberate. Six thin ones read as chaos.

Step 4 — Give the temporary ones a landing spot

This is the step most people skip. A small cable organiser or a couple of adhesive clips at the front edge means the charging cable always returns to the same place instead of falling behind the desk. Fishing a cable off the floor is the moment tidy desks die.

Step 5 — Label anything that goes to a power strip

A strip of tape and a pen. Six months from now you will be able to unplug the right thing without crawling under the desk.
